A glossary of terms related to the Jaspersoft Server and SIS reports.
An ad hoc view is a subset of the data available in a Domain, presented as a customizable report. Ad Hoc Views can either be used in the Ad Hoc Editor for easy customization or saved as a report. Many of the reports available in the Reports folders in Jaspersoft Server will have underlying Ad Hoc Views. Ad Hoc Views are available in the Data Sources folder in Jaspersoft Server and are prefixed with VW. Users with permission can also create their own Ad Hoc Views from a Domain using the Ad Hoc Editor.
A dashboard is an integrated view of two or more reports, and it may include input controls for selecting the data displayed. Each report included in a dashboard is shown as a dashboard.
A domain is a virtual view of a data source (Banner, for SIS reports) that provides data in business terms and can be built with role-based security. Domains are the broadest data sets and can serve as the basis for many ad hoc views and reports. Domains will be prefixed with DM_ in Jaspersoft Server and are located in the Data Sources Folder. Currently only the SIS Reporting Team can create domains.
Jaspersoft Server is the hub for SIS Reporting and where users will go to consume pre-built reports and use the ad-hoc editor to create or modify existing ad-hoc views.
Depending on the context:
- In a report, it is a formula that calculates the values displayed within a table’s column.
- In an OLAP View, a formula that calculates the facts that constitute the quantitative data in a cube.
A set of users that share folders and resources in the repository. An organization has its own user accounts and roles, permissions, and repository content.
I.E. The school of Divinity has their own folder within their repository.
The Public Folder in Jaspersoft Server is not actually ‘Public’, but rather a place for shared reports and data sources controlled by role-based access. For example, users with ROLE_REGISTRAR will be able to see the “Registration Folder” in Public, but those without the role will not. Users cannot modify reports in the Public Folder, but can save them to their individual Orgs. Users with the correct permissions can also access Domains in the Public Folder and use them to create Ad Hoc Views and Reports in their own Orgs. When saving a report or using a Domain, the linkage to the data source remains, so any updates or changes to the data will cascade down to reports saved at the Org level.
Reports are fixed in format and cannot be edited except to sort, filter, and hide columns. Reports can built in the Jaspersoft Studio desktop tool, or by saving an Ad Hoc View as mentioned above. Reports will be saved in the Reports folder in Jaspersoft Server. While less flexible in terms of data configuration, reports can be more performant because they limit the data that is loaded and can have query-based input controls.
Roles in Jaspersoft are currently created manually by the SIS Reporting Team and are used to restrict access to data in Domains and to provide access to Orgs and folders in Public. Roles can restrict data at the row and/or the column level. Access to data is governed by the data stewards in the University Registrar’s Office.
